Microsoft Word 2002 — Getting Attacked

John Tyra | July 9th, 2008

Not that a Microsoft security hole is news exactly, but hey I want to make sure you are safe and secure. Then again, who is still using Office 2002 still anyway? You are, really? Oh — please, post a comment so I can pick on you. =)

(Just kidding, I won’t pick on you…in public)

InfoWorld has been covering this story , including the previous announcements that not only Microsoft has released but ~also the advisories that Symantec has put out. Normally I don’t like it when someone rats me out, but in this case, it looks like a good deal.

So, if you are still using the old version of Office, I’d highly suggest to head on over to Windows Update and get this patch in addition to any others that are available to you. Even though the current claim is a mere "limited, targeted [number of] attacks" I am willing to bet anyone is at risk. Don’t try your luck, update today! (Wow…that sounded like a Microsoft slogan…bleh)

Microsoft: Windows Update “Update”

John Tyra | July 8th, 2008

Not to be confused as a play on words…OK, maybe it is, but either way Microsoft publicly announced that it is going to update the ‘Windows Update Agent’ at the end of July and over the next few months. Well it’s about time! They pulled a silent ‘update’ about a year ago that pissed off a bunch of people in the computing community. Really, why would they NOT disclose these kind of updates? They release KB articles and such to the public, as well as zero-day vulnerabilities, so why not these type of updates as well? Get real…if you’re pushing code changes and patches to my computer, I want to know about it…

Severe VoIP Vulnerabilities To Be Announced Today

John Tyra | June 25th, 2008

VoIP security firm VoIPshield is going to announce multiple VoIP-based vulnerabilites in conjunction with some of the big telecom vendors: Avaya, Cisco and Nortel to name a few. This announcement is going to occur today, 6/25/08, at 12PM Eastern/11AM Central/9AM Pacific.

So, we can bet that the big enterprise telecom guys and gals will be pretty busy the next few days, because you can be sure that the hackers out there are also going to be listening in on this announcement. Will there be any big-named companies in the news this week who didn’t patch their systems, and as a result got caught? As my favorite saying goes, "only time will tell".

What are your thoughts? I’d love to hear how you feel about this! =)
