Georgia (The Country) President Web-Site DDOS’ed

John Tyra | July 21st, 2008

At first, being geographically challenged, I was thinking…”president of Georgia…wtf?!?!”…and then I remembered Russia’s neighbor, Georgia. Anyway, apparently their site was on the receiving end of a DDOS attack last weekend (7/19/08 - 7/20/08) according to the ‘ShadowServer Foundation’ who monitors attacks like these.

This attack was directed from a botnet farm, which seems to be the standard (and highly effective) DDOS method currently in use. The ShadowServer website says it’s not certain if the attack orianted from Russia or not, but that the MachBot C&C server (used for the attack) is a common tool used by Russian bot herders.

Revision3: Kicking butt and taking names!

John Tyra | June 17th, 2008

Revision3, which many of you know hosts Diggnation along with many other video-casts, has been quietly working in the background to position themselves as the next major source for pod- and video-casts. Just yesterday, they announced an agreement with "the first video sharing service powered by advertising" called Revver . (Personally I’ve never heard of them, but their service seems promising…)

That’s not all…Revision3 has more plans in store, such as the famous Gary Vaynerchuk’s upcoming move to the Revision3 family coming up on June 23rd that can be found (as an ad) in many of the current Revision3 video-casts. However, it’s been stated that the production will stay in New York…but of course, Gary would not have it any other way — BRING THE THUNDER GARY VAY–NER–CHUK!!! You can find more Gary goodness and his wine video-casts at http://tv.winelibrary.com/

Yet another new member to the ever-growing Revision3 family is Epic Fu! This was promoted on the live Diggnation episode in New York with Kevin and Alex recently, and is an excellent video-cast compliment to the existing lineup at Revision3. Check them out here: http://revision3.com/epicfu/

So what does all of this mean? The well-known Jim Louderback is quoted saying "Revver is a key partner in our distribution efforts" which makes me wonder…what exactly are they aiming for in their long term video distribution plan(s)? Did the DDOS attack on Revision3 force them to consider other avenues of distribution, perhaps even a scaled system? For the longest, they have relied on BitTorrent and ‘old school’ direct downloads for their site, which in turn generate ad revenue dollars for their sponsors. But when the downloads stop, so do the number of views thus the revenue dollars start to dwindle…if the trend continued. (Fortunately, the DDOS was only lasted roughly a few days.)

Keep an eye on these folks…there will be new and exciting announcements to come, and you don’t want to miss out on the action!
