Internet worm exploits Windows vulnerability | Security - CNET News

John Tyra | November 27th, 2008

Internet worm exploits Windows vulnerability | Security - CNET News. A new worm, exploit or vulnerability for Microsoft is not exactly news. But, I did think it was interesting that this particular worm will actually patch the system in question after infection to prevent other malware varients from taking over the system. Greedy, greedy worms I tell you…

Verizon fires workers who snooped on Obama cell records | ZDNet Government | ZDNet.com

John Tyra | November 23rd, 2008

Verizon fires workers who snooped on Obama cell records | ZDNet Government | ZDNet.com. A few days ago, news broke about Obama’s cell phone records being accessed (or maybe released?) was making headlines. Verizon has updated their statement to show that they have fired some (unknown) number of employees who were involved in this situation. Well, good — I think that employees for *ANY* company should be held responsible for the actions they perform on customer data. No matter who’s data it is, Obama or an average citizen, it should be treated with respect and confidentality.

Maybe there should be a password put on each account, at the discression of the customer, which is required for the employee/rep to access the account. Thus, only managers and employees higher up the food chain can openly access customers accounts. Entries should all be logged for auditing should anything come up, of course. =)

BBC NEWS | Technology | Spam plummets as gang leaves net

John Tyra | November 13th, 2008

BBC NEWS | Technology | Spam plummets as gang leaves net. Well there is some good news after all. After only 48 hours: “Anti-spam firm Ironport has seen junk mail levels drop by 70% since McColo was taken offline on 11 November.” WOW! These kids at McColo must have been hauling it out by the truckload. Don’t get too excited, though. “”It is an unprecedented drop but will be a temporary outage as the networks move from North America to places where there is less scrutiny,” said Jason Steer, a spokesman for Ironport. “

Microsoft warns of another update to Windows Update

John Tyra | November 3rd, 2008

Microsoft warns of another update to Windows Update. What caught my eye on this one? “This update makes it possible for users to install more than 80 updates at the same time.”

Uh-huh, sure — if it’s true, though, I’ll be a happy nerd. My home broadband connection will finally get some use. =)

Apple’s iPhone Security Flaw

John Tyra | August 29th, 2008

Apple’s famous iPhone has GPS, syncs your iTunes, connects at 3G speeds and will give away your personal data! Who wants one? The flaw allows anyone to access the personal data on the iPhone even if it is locked with a passcode.

What is required to bypass the security, according to Macworld: “hit the ‘emergency calls’ button, and then hit the Home button rapidly twice when they will be automatically transported to a users ‘Favorites’ folder (by default).” From here you can get to a user’s email, contacts and their web browser even though you have not entered the passcode. Apple is working on a patch, but until then there is a ‘fix’ that involves changing the home button to pull up something other than your favorites.

Digging Deeper: Dan Kaminsky’s DNS Flaw

John Tyra | August 7th, 2008

The DNS flaw problem has been floating around in the news for months now, but has been kept ’secret’ while Dan Kaminsky has been working with vendors to develop a fix. Many articles have been posted on this; we’re using one from ChannelWeb and from Network World. Kaminsky, directory of ISActive, is the individual who found this DNS flaw which he presented at the Black Hat conference yesterday (8/6/08). I haven’t been following this too closely, since the details have been kept under wraps for so long, but yesterday’s presentation got my attention. Chew on this:

“The question is not how many things can you break with DNS, but how many things can’t you break,” Kaminsky said. “We’re barely keeping hold of the secrets of why it’s so important to patch.”

There is, quite literally, a grocery list of items affected when your DNS has been compromised:

  • Taking over .com/.net/.org domains
  • Sniffing emails
  • Modification/infection of emails to/from sender or receiver
  • IPSec VPN redirection
  • SSL certification
  • Auto software updates
  • Spam filters
  • Etc

If you’d like to check your DNS server, or the DNS server you’re using, check out Kaminsky’s site:

http://doxpara.com/

However, at the moment of this posting, his site is ‘down’ which is probably due to the flood of hits from people checking their DNS.
