Will There Be Enough BlackBerry Storms Tomorrow? - The Channel Wire - IT Channel News And Views by CRN and VARBusiness. There were enough iPhones after a few days, so I don’t think this’ll be a problem, really…

Sun restructures, lays off up to 6,000 | Business Tech - CNET News

John Tyra | November 14th, 2008

Sun restructures, lays off up to 6,000 | Business Tech - CNET News. Another major hit this week in the technology sector with Sun Microsystems as they announce the layout of ~6k of their employees. Perhaps we should keep a running total of how many tech companies are joining the layout party and how many layoffs they account for.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Spam plummets as gang leaves net

John Tyra | November 13th, 2008

BBC NEWS | Technology | Spam plummets as gang leaves net. Well there is some good news after all. After only 48 hours: “Anti-spam firm Ironport has seen junk mail levels drop by 70% since McColo was taken offline on 11 November.” WOW! These kids at McColo must have been hauling it out by the truckload. Don’t get too excited, though. “”It is an unprecedented drop but will be a temporary outage as the networks move from North America to places where there is less scrutiny,” said Jason Steer, a spokesman for Ironport. “

Of heartbeats and headphones | Editors’ Notes | Macworld

John Tyra | November 11th, 2008

Of heartbeats and headphones | Editors’ Notes | Macworld. Yet another example of publishers/bloggers/etc NOT reading the entire article. Long story short: Magnets can mess with your pacemaker, regardless of if they are in headphones or a cup of coffee. Macworld’s article had a link to an article where the details were not included for their readers, thus forming a quick and incorrect conclusion.

AT&T Tethering Coming Soon; Really

John Tyra | November 7th, 2008

AT&T Tethering Coming Soon; Really I’m not an iPhone owner, but I have hear the voice of others regarding the lack of this feature. Their answer? Jailbreak! A friend of mine was using his jailbroken iPhone just the other day to browse the web on his laptop, and it worked great…other than it drained the heck out of the battery. =)

Hopefully this won’t be another $20/$40/$xx nasty chunk of change added to the AT&T customer’s bill. We’ll see!

Microsoft warns of another update to Windows Update

John Tyra | November 3rd, 2008

Microsoft warns of another update to Windows Update. What caught my eye on this one? “This update makes it possible for users to install more than 80 updates at the same time.”

Uh-huh, sure — if it’s true, though, I’ll be a happy nerd. My home broadband connection will finally get some use. =)

eBay Cuts Jobs While Making Aquisitions

John Tyra | October 6th, 2008

A quick news clip about eBay; it seems they are planning on laying off around 1,000 employees in the same instant that they are aquiring a few businesses. First is ‘Bill Me Later, Inc’, according to the ComputerWorld article, which brings around a billion dollars for the deal. ‘Bill Me Later, Inc’ is a US based online payment company. The other two deals, weighing in at $390 mil, are for Dba.dk and Bilbasen.dk which are both online Danish classified advertisment sites.

Is this yet another step in eBay’s goal to take over the world? =)

New Intel Processors: 1x, 2x, 4x

John Tyra | September 2nd, 2008

Fresh article over at Ars Technica about some new Intel processors being launches over Labor Day. All of these processors seem to be aimed at the consumer low-end based on their feature offering. Here is the line up based on Ars Technica:

Core 2 Quad 8200

In the mainstream quad-core market, we have the new 45nm Core 2 Quad 8200, at 2.33GHz, 4MB L2 cache, and a 1333MHz FSB. Intel lists the chip at $224 in 1K quantities; Newegg has it up for sale for $229.99.

Core 2 Duo E5200 & Celeron 450

Intel’s new dual-core is the E5200 (2.5GHz, 2MB L2, 800MHz FSB) at $84, while the new single-core Celeron 450 is a 65nm, 2.2GHz chip, with 512K of L2 cache and an 800MHz FSB. Price on this chip is $53. The new E5200 slides in well below the next-cheapest Core 2 Duo (Allendale 2.4GHz, 2MB L2, 800MHz FSB), and is a no-brainer replacement for that chip, provided you want to stay Intel. The Celly 450 is what it is—a single-core chip for $53.

Good time to think about rebuilding that old system collecting dust. =)

Apple’s iPhone Security Flaw

John Tyra | August 29th, 2008

Apple’s famous iPhone has GPS, syncs your iTunes, connects at 3G speeds and will give away your personal data! Who wants one? The flaw allows anyone to access the personal data on the iPhone even if it is locked with a passcode.

What is required to bypass the security, according to Macworld: “hit the ‘emergency calls’ button, and then hit the Home button rapidly twice when they will be automatically transported to a users ‘Favorites’ folder (by default).” From here you can get to a user’s email, contacts and their web browser even though you have not entered the passcode. Apple is working on a patch, but until then there is a ‘fix’ that involves changing the home button to pull up something other than your favorites.

Internet Virus Reaches Outer Space

John Tyra | August 28th, 2008

Is W32.TGammima.AG the first virus (well, worm, technically) to become intergalatic? Maybe, thanks to NASA, who admitted to Wired that a laptop aboard the international space station was infected with W32.TGammima.AG. To make matters worse, it appears that the infection was spread across multiple laptops on the station. Perhaps it’s time for NASA to invest in some AV software?

NASA did say, however, that it did not affect critical systems and was instead on laptops used for email. The space station can’t exactly access the internet, but they do have a KU band data link for email, data and video transfer according to Wired.
